Study Title: Comparative Effectiveness of Mobile Health Smoking Cessation Approaches among Underserved Patients in Primary Care
Department of Health Outcomes and Biomedical Informatics

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable, disease, disability, and death in the United States. This study aims to determine the comparative effectiveness, clinical adaptability, barriers, and facilitators of two novel smoking cessation treatments. The first treatment is the current standard of care in Florida: The Tobacco Free Florida Quitline, the second is based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for behavioral change, and the third is based on ACT with contingency management. These three treatments will be analyzed quantitatively to determine each of their rates of achieving smoking abstinence at six months and qualitatively through interviews with clinic care teams and patients.

My Role

Research Mentor: Dr. Jennifer LeLaurin
August 2024-present

As a clinical research assistant, my primary role is participant recruitment, engagement, and retention. I enroll patients who smoke from the UF Health Eastside Family Medicine clinic, measure an initial breath Carbon Monoxide concentration, and assist them in completing baseline surveys. I manage their information using REDcap quantitative data storage, their follow up visits, and payments. My secondary role is in qualitative analysis. I am trained in motivational interviewing, and prepare and conduct interviews based on the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) with patients enrolled in the study and clinical care team members. I assist in transcript template based summarizing of the interviews, before team based matrix coding and analysis.

Interests
As a student, my primary focus lies on the intersection of chemistry, biology, math, and physics. My favorite classes involve the connections between the sciences and I will pursue more classes on molecular biology and physics. For my major, I'm taking a broad survey on the branches of chemistry and molecular biology. My Pre-medical curriculum includes many basic sciences alongside medical sciences, social sciences, and humanities. My physics minor is to pursue higher level math and further understand quantum processes. I'm also interested in environmental science and have taken electives on soils and wetlands.
